As time has gone on, I’ve come to realize that my spiritual ramblings really need a place of their own. I’ll be sharing some things in here that really don’t need to be shared with the world at large, so if you’re reading this, you’re obviously among the few I’ve invited—and that actually care. For that, I thank you.

Gender Equality

In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of talk about “gender equality” in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While so-called “Mormon feminists” have been around since at least the 1970s, the current renewed focus seems to have started with a Facebook group encouraging women to wear pants to Church on Sunday, 16 December 2012, in contrast to the prevailing culture which encourages them to wear skirts or dresses. (The Church, for its part, does not have any position on pants vs. skirts. As Church spokesman Scott Trotter stated in response to the proposed action, “Generally church members are encouraged to wear their best clothing as a sign of respect for the Savior, but we don’t counsel people beyond that.”) As for my ward of the Church, my perception was that “Pants Sunday” was an utter failure. The True Cost of a REAL Wedding

So this morning, Guy Kawasaki tweeted a link to this page: The True Cost of a Wedding.  Looking at these numbers, it amazes me how much the world has taken something beautiful and made it into something gaudy. First of all, I find it extremely telling that out of the 50 states, the lowest average wedding cost is Utah. I suspect this is because so many people there get married in the temple , which not only assures that your marriage can last a lot longer , but also includes the side benefit of being absolutely free. But even in Utah, the average cost is $13,214! I know these are 2010 costs vs. our 1997/98 wedding and receptions, but still. Let’s break this down: Average number of bridesmaids: 4 Bridesmaids at our wedding: 1 Average number of groomsmen: 4 Groomsmen at our wedding: 0 Average number of guests: 141 Guests at our wedding: 4 Guests at our first reception: about 100 Guests at our second reception: about 30 Average length of engagement: 14 months Our engagement

The President Packer Postulate (Part I)

This past Sunday, President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gave an amazing discourse in General Conference, entitled Cleansing the Inner Temple . In this talk, President Packer had the audacity to state that—surprise!—sin is bad. A lot of people didn’t like it that he said that, and even many members of the Church are calling for President Packer to apologize for his comments, particularly with respect to homosexuality. Now, before I continue with this post, I want to emphasize something: I am not a “gay-basher.” I have friends and family who identify themselves as gay. Some of them are probably better people than I am! And while I don’t agree with their decision to live that way, I love them and treat just like I do anyone else. (As I told one such friend: if I stopped being friends with everyone who did something I don’t agree with, I’d be a very lonely man, wallowing in a pit of self-hatred.) ;-) Demonizing others is wrong.
